It is my pleasure to share with you my thoughts on yet another Mountain Sky product.

In the past few years, as my relationship with lip stick diminished, to the point that I never use commercial lip sticks any more, my relationship with lip balms increased.

I have been very happy to find at least one really phenomenal lip balm, amongst the many on the market that claim to be “natural“. So when I learned that Mountain Sky had a lip balm, I was very excited to see if it too would be of superior quality when it comes to natural products.

Mountain Sky is a small, family owned company that specializes in natural products out of British Columbia, Canada. They take care to make sure that their products are environmentally friendly, just as they are healthy for each of us to use. To learn more about Mountain Sky, check out my feature write-up on Mountain Sky or visit their web site – Mountain Sky.

Mountain Sky has 4 varieties of the “Love Thy Lips” natural lip balm they produce: Mountain (unflavored), Mint, Raspberry and Blackberry. Although their three flavors sound great, when given an unflavored or unscented option, I always choose that. So in this review I will focus specifically on my experience with the Mountain or natural, unflavored variety.

The company claims that these are “extra creamy natural lip protectors” and I have to tell you, they deliver that claim really well. The first thing that impressed me so much about this lip balm is exactly that – how smoothly and softly it glides onto ones lips. It is not too hard to have to be pressed into lips, and not too soft that it feels more like a lip gloss. The product consistency I think excels any other natural balm I have tried.

The product therefore is excellent in terms of moisturizing properties and also does not have to be applied often, as long as one does not lick their lips excessively. Thus it lasts really well on the lips to offer protection and at the same time to be moisturizing. The host of nourishing ingredients like, hemp oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, almond oil and more, are to be credited for this wonderful function.

In terms of ingredients, Mountain Sky really delivers well on making sure these are top notch natural, with no chemical fillers whatsoever. I would have loved to seen the ingredients come from organic sources of course, but the owners of Mountain Sky explain that these would raise costs, among other things.

What else is really important to add here is that the product has no SPF or sunblock ingredients and this is really, really good! We have become so obsessed in our society with sunblock ingredients in all of our skin products, including lip balm that today we can thank those for our widespread vitamin D deficiency. Not to mention SPF ingredients are some of the most toxic and should never be used in lip balms or lip products as those are most easily ingested.

The only other improvement that I would love to see on these products is to not use Palm Oil ingredients, as these are causing some ecological disasters today, and there are many other nourishing ingredients that can be used. In fact just by taking this ingredient out, I think the product already has an amazing selection of nourishing ingredients and would be great on its own.

In terms of scent/flavor, I am sure the flavored lip balms smell wonderful, however I still always think that the less additives the better, so I recommend going for the unflavored variety. What I also really liked about this lip balm in terms of scent/flavor is that it had the faintest sweet scent, which I imagine is the combination of the oils used. I have tried other unflavored/unscented lip balms and they did have an almost slightly chemical scent/flavor, whereas this one was really just right.

The product is suitable for children and adults. It is vegetarian, however not strict vegan friendly due to the beeswax. Mountain Sky does not test their products on animals.

In conclusion, this is a really great lip balm, with ingredients that one can feel comfortable putting on their lips and at the same knowing that it will work well.
