Each day we absorb a variety of substances from our environment. Whether through our mouth in the forms of food and drinks, through our breath from the air we breathe, or through our skin from the substances that come into contact with it, thousands of substances impact us each day. Yet we often fail to take into account the impact each of these substances has on our health and wellness.
The good news is that more and more of us are becoming health conscious, and becoming more mindful of what we put into and onto our bodies. Today we know without a shadow of a doubt, that both of those areas directly impact the quality of our current and future health, our energy levels, our weight, our rate of aging, even our happiness and overall life quality.
Being that each of us is at different points on our journey of optimal wellness, we each need to personally address what areas require our attention the most, what changes we want to follow through with and what improvements we wish to make at any given time. For optimal health, each of us needs to make the maintenance of our body and health, as well as prevention activities a regular part of our life.
One form of assisting our body to live in the best state possible and a form of preventative care is cleansing or detoxifying. Many of us are hearing more about this topic and its inherent benefits, but few of us know where to begin. In the video interview, digestive health expert Brenda Watson author of The Detox Strategy shares some important facts and tips about cleansing and detoxification. Brenda has written numerous books on the subject, has been featured on various popular media outlets throughout North America and is the founder of the Renew Life company, a leader in digestive health products.
In the video, Brenda explains how and why she ended up being so passionate about this field of holistic health, as well as how this field has changed over the past few decades and its future trends. She shares about her total body cleanse program, who should cleanse, how often, why we should cleanse, how to do it safely and more.
How Do I Know if I am Toxic?

Brenda’s Cleansing & Detoxification Tips
A good cleansing program uses a combination of herbs and nutrients, along with a sensible whole food diet to support all of the body’s 7 channels of elimination (liver, lungs, colon, kidneys, blood, skin and lymphatic system).
The ideal times to cleanse are around the New Year, Spring, and Fall.
It is recommended to cleanse 2 to 3 times per year to reduce the risk of disease and to maintain and increase energy levels.
If using a do-it-yourself total cleanse, like those from Renew Life, follow the cleansing kit instructions, as directed on the package.
Take a 50% soluble fiber and 50% insoluble fiber supplement to help absorb toxins and “scrape” them from the intestinal wall, to safely move toxins out of the body.
Consider an omega supplement to lubricate the colon for easier passage of toxins.
Eat nutrient-rich and organic foods (where possible).
Reduce excessive red meat consumption. If you choose to eat it, make sure it’s organic.
Swap coffee for good quality, organic green tea.
Limit or avoid all processed foods made with flour, sugar, yeast, and dairy.
Drink plenty of clean water (spring or distilled).
Be active daily (walk, run, play sports).
Reduce Stress (yoga, meditation, fun activities).
Get enough sleep (7+hours each night).
