As more and more of us learn about the awesome nutritional benefits of hemp, we begin to look for ways to include these in our diets. So we turn to companies who produce various hemp products and try to locate the best, whole, unprocessed sources.

The most natural ways to consume hemp as food are the seeds, the oil or the ground powder. In this review, I will share with you my experience and notes on one particular hemp powder and that is Nutiva’s Organic Hemp Protein powder.

Nutiva is a California-based company founded by John Roulac, and dedicated to producing the most wholesome, organic and nutritious hemp foods, coconut oil and chia seeds. You can read more about John and the company in our interview with Nutiva.

Having had some experience with hemp powder before, I was curious to see how this product would work out. I had tried two of Manitoba Harvest’s protein powders before, and while the first one was very unpleasant, the second one was a great success.

When it came to this product, I am happy to report that it was a very pleasant experience. See, the problem with most hemp powders is their mixing ability in solution. When these products first came out, they made a very gritty, powdery and thick olive-green solution that wasn’t the most pleasant to drink or look at. Now, most of these companies have brought out easy mixing, more soluble powders that are great in all smoothies and shakes.

The hemp protein powder comes as a dark olive (brownish-green) powder. One serving is equal to 4 tablespoons (30g).

What makes this product stand out against some other sources of hemp powders is that it is USDA certified organic. For ultimate purity, the product also does not include any hexane, gluten, dairy, lactose or sweeteners.

The nutritional value, as with all whole hemp products is fantastic, providing a whopping 15g of protein per serving, as well as 6g of fiber and 0.8g of omega-3 fatty acids (ALA). The product is also a high source of iron.

When one compares this product to an equivalent of the Manitoba Harvest protein powders, there are some nutritional value differences, which I imagine vary due to the source of the plant (soil grown in) and perhaps nutritional testing methods.

When in solution (like a fruit/veggie smoothie), the product does mix well, and there is very little powdery residue. I use a blender always for this, which makes it much better compared to just stirring it in with a spoon.

As for taste, depending on what you mix it with, I would say it does change the taste or add to it a little, a slightly sweet and nutty flavor.

To start off with this product, I would recommend, starting with no more than 2 tablespoonfuls per 250-300mls/8-10oz liquid serving, and working up to 4 tablespoons if desired from there. Ultimately there are many ways to experiment with this product to make it suitable for one’s taste buds and nutritional needs.
