Today, more and more of us are getting to know the amazing health benefits of hemp as food, that have been kept quiet for far too long. More people are learning to consume hemp in the many versatile food forms that it comes in, and alongside gaining the health benefits from it.

The most wholesome and natural ways to consume it, to gain as much nutritional benefits while not going too far into the processed food territory are the seeds, the oil, the butter and the powder.

While my most favorite and recommended way of eating hemp, are the whole hemp seeds, I decided to explore another form of hemp. This is where Nutiva’s Organic Cold Pressed Hemp Oil comes in, and in this review I will share with you my experience with it.

Nutiva is a California-based company founded by John Roulac, and dedicated to producing the most wholesome, organic and nutritious hemp foods, coconut oil and chia seeds. To learn more about John or Nutiva see the interview with John here.

I have normally stayed away from picking up oils like hemp oil, or flax seed oil, etc., as I felt that they were meant to be taken almost like a medicine. So drinking them by the tablespoonful didn’t seem too appealing. I knew they couldn’t be used for cooking, as they are too fragile to be heated (their properties would get destroyed and unhealthy compounds would be formed), and I wasn’t really sure what else to use them for, not thinking that anywhere I use olive oil in the raw, I can substitute in hemp oil. But as I read and learned from others, it turns out that hemp oil has many common uses, and there is no need to consume it on its own, if one does not choose so.

A quick common use for example, and the way I have been eating this product now, is as the base for homemade salad dressings. Some people also put it in their smoothies, or simply drizzle it on whatever meal they are eating, that may suit the product, especially pasta dishes.

When it comes to this oil, as all other Nutiva products, it is of a high, pure quality. Nutiva’s Organic Hemp Oil is organic (certified by USDA & QAI). The oil is raw and unrefined. And as it is organic, it comes from non-GMO sources, with no pesticides used during its growth. It is a product of Canada.

The oil is a light olive-yellow color and tastes very much like the hemp seeds. It has a nutty flavor, but one that is not strong, overpowering or unpleasant.

It is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, and it has the best health ratio (3:1) of omega-6:omega-3. The difference too between this oil, and flax seed oil is that hemp oil contains super omega-3 (SDA) and super omega-6 (GLA). These not only help the conversion into EPA and DHA, but they also help metabolize fat and combat the effects of stress, aging and environmental toxins.

It is also a rich source of vitamin E, but not considered a significant source of protein or other nutrients, as it is an oil, and used best as a healthy fat source. It is free of cholesterol and trans fats. The oil should be refrigerated for optimal freshness.

So the next time you are up for trying a new salad dressing, or adding some healthy fats to your meals, I do recommend the hemp seed oil. For me it is as simple as squeezing the juice of 1 lemon and combining it with a roughly equal part of the hemp seed oil and some sea or Himalayan salt, and black pepper, for a refreshing and light salad dressing. Enjoy!
