Area(s) of My Health and Wellness that Needed Change

For most of my life I never cared about my health very much. I drank too much beer and stayed up too late and ate too much food that was easy to get and quick to eat. After many years of this, I was a fat and I almost never felt good on any given day.

Like so many other people I began to assume that when you have chronic heartburn, you simply take a medication for it. I just assumed that the human body gets older and rarely feels good, and I thought that everybody went through this. By the time I was almost 40 years old, I weighed 230 pounds and was looking pretty plump and tired, to say the least.

Strategies I Implemented & Their Results

One night, out of boredom I saw a simple little film that would change almost every single thing about who I am today. Faced with nothing to do and nothing on the TV I found this film online called Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. In recent years it has become a pretty popular movie about juicing and is even credited with starting a so-called juice revolution.

But I got a lot more out of it than that. To me it is a story of someone trying something new and getting incredible results that seemed too good to be true. It wasn’t only about weight loss and looking better, but being healthy and actually feeling better by eating foods that are simple, natural and readily available.

That night, after the film ended, I decided that I would be healthy too. I was so inspired by what I had witnessed on my TV screen that I told my wife, who was out of town for work, that we would be juicing and becoming healthy when she got back the following week.

And that is exactly what we did. And it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done! If you have not tried juicing vegetables and fruits for many days in a row, let me tell you that you do not feel great at first. I was shaky and hungry and grumpy. But that did not stop me because I was seeing my weight decline by about one pound a day. In the end I only made it through 6 whole days of “eating” only the juice from vegetables and fruit. That was all I could stand.

How My Changes Benefitted Me

Juicing was not meant to be the only part of my new life though. I loved the idea of starting to feel better and I definitely loved how I was losing weight and how I didn’t have to kill myself doing it. You see, I had tried to lose weight and feel better many times before. I went to the gym and counted calories and avoided “fattening” foods just like everybody says to do.

I took up running, which at 230lbs is not a lot of fun, and a little hard on the knees at best. But I did it. I ran at least one and up to 3 miles a day, most days of the week. After doing this for many months, I never felt better and never lost a pound. So to drink some vegetable juice and lose weight without any additional effort seemed too easy to me, and I had no intention of stopping my journey here.

But really, the juicing was just my jump start. My wife and I started shopping at stores where they sell better food items. We started realizing that reading food labels is one of the most important things we could do for our health. What was surprising is how most of what I had been told in the past did not matter. Focusing on calories and avoiding fat didn’t get me anywhere, so I decided to stop doing it altogether.

Instead of focusing on those insignificant things, I now focus on nutrition. I think that when you feed your body what it has been wanting, it will take care of you in return. The human body isn’t looking for the latest gimmick or fad, but it is looking for vitamins and minerals to go into its cells so that it can feel its best. The human body is not looking for a lean pocket or a granola bar with as much sugar in it as a soda.

Since that boring evening over a year ago, I managed to lose over 70 pounds and I have kept it off the entire time. While losing that weight has made me feel like I never have, at least in my adult life, it has done a lot of other great things for me. It has made me healthy!

The last time I had my blood work done with my doctor, my triglycerides were over 500. If you are not in the know, 500 is not a good score to have on a lipid panel by a long shot. A few months ago I decided to have my blood work done again to make sure I was on the right path. My triglycerides are now at a cool 154 and I do not see them going up any time in my lifetime.

Remember that chronic heartburn that I adored so much? It’s all gone now. Almost every single ailment that I used to have is gone now. And all of this was done by the simplest method known to the human race. Eating healthy, natural foods and avoiding as many processed foods as humanly possible.

Wisdom & Inspiration for Others

Anyone can do this. There is nothing special about me or my wife, and we certainly do not have extra special metabolisms to work with. The best part of it all is that it really isn’t complicated either. There are no calories to count or rules to follow or ratios of fat to protein that need to be calculated all day long.

There is not a single fun thing about living a life based on excess weight, discomfort, or disease, if you can call it living at all. The truth is that any person can take charge of their health just like I did, and you can absolutely get the same results. The only think you really need is an open mind and the will to feel better and be in control of your life, at least on one aspect of it.

Billions of dollars are being made and wasted every year in an effort for people to become healthy and lose weight. I can tell you that this is just not necessary. There is never going to be a fruit extract at $50 a bottle that will do for your health what simply eating the fruit could do.

It’s a real shame to see diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure to be so rampant in our society. So many of these types of ailments can be controlled or cured with a healthy and natural lifestyle. I believe this with every ounce of sincerity I have, and would absolutely bet my life on it before I will take another pill from the local pharmacy.
