Whether you are cooking your food, or preparing it raw, often times we look for an oil to add to our food preparation. Adding a fat, or in this case an oil need not be an unhealthy thing. After all, we do need to eat a certain amount of fat for optimal health and wellness.

This is where my experience has lead me to find coconut oil. Coconut oil being mostly a saturated fat, is highly stable under high heat (up to 350 F), not becoming denatured or producing harmful compounds or trans fats. Not only is it heat stable, but it is also a nutritional powerhouse and the saturated fat is made up of healthy medium chain fatty acids. It is an excellent tasting and highly beneficial food source, as long as it comes in a whole, unrefined form.

One such coconut oil that I have found is Nutiva’s Organic Raw Coconut Oil.

Nutiva is a California-based company founded by John Roulac, and dedicated to producing the most wholesome, organic and nutritious hemp foods, coconut oil and chia seeds. For more information on Nutiva, please see my interview with John Roulac.

The key to having a high quality coconut oil for the most health benefits, is to find one that is unrefined and comes from top quality sources.

Nutiva’s Organic Raw Coconut Oil is as the name states first and foremost, organic (USDA & QAI certified). Aside from being unrefined and extra virgin as well, it is also raw. It is pure white and not deodorized or bleached. It is made without pesticides or hexane and comes from non-GMO sources. It is a product of Mexico.

To ensure this product’s raw quality, Nutiva uses a 100% raw process that separates the protein and water by a centrifugal spinning technique, with a maximum temperature reached of 118 F. This is perhaps the biggest difference between this coconut oil and Nutiva’s Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.

The other difference is the taste or aroma. This oil is much more subtle and delicate, that the extra virgin coconut oil. Thus, it is a perfect choice, for those who would like to enjoy the health benefits of coconut oil, but perhaps are not too crazy about the coconut taste.

For me personally, I love the taste and aroma more of Nutiva’s organic extra virgin coconut oil more as it is stronger, but still loved using this one. What I liked more about this one is that it is raw, and also comes in a glass jar. Those two are really appealing qualities when it comes to our health.

This oil tends to be just a little more expansive than the Nutiva’s organic extra virgin coconut oil and is not yet as widely available, as the other variety. However, all the products are always available and in all the different sizes from directly with free shipping on orders over $30.

In conclusion, this is a fantastic product for anyone who wants to enjoy the health benefits of a high quality coconut oil, especially for those who choose a raw diet or would prefer a milder coconut taste and aroma.
