For those of us who have discovered the amazing health benefits of hemp, we know that there are many ways we can eat it, as it comes as oils, milks, butters and more!

My most favorite and recommended way of eating it, is the whole hemp seed. This is the most whole, unprocessed, unrefined way of ingesting the most, of all the goodness that hemp has to offer. Thus in this review, I will share with you my experience and notes on Nutiva’s Organic Shelled Hempseed.

Nutiva is a California-based company founded by John Roulac, and dedicated to producing the most wholesome, organic and nutritious hemp foods, coconut oil and chia seeds.

I have been eating hemp seeds now for almost 2 years and just loving the nutritional benefits associated with them! Today, they are almost a daily staple of my diet.

Before I tried this product, I had tried hemp seeds from 2 other companies – both of which I was happy with. When it comes to hemp seeds, there isn’t much difference between manufacturers, aside from how the product was grown (quality of soil) and the type of facility it was packaged in. So it is best to look for organic sources, with no additives or chemicals used in processing.

Nutiva’s Organic Hemp Seeds are organic (certified by USDA & QAI). These seeds are also raw. They are a product of Canada. They are cold-pressed with the oxygen removed to maintain maximum freshness of the seed, but especially the delicate omega 3 fatty acids.

The freshness was evident upon opening the bag in how great the seeds smelled and they were also more “oily” than some others I have tried, which seemed more dried out compared to these.

They are 33% protein, and offer 9% omega 3 (3g of ALA). Aside from their phenomenal omega 3 and protein content, what else is also impressive is their high magnesium, iron, zinc and phosphorus content. These nutrients are good for everyone, but especially vegans and vegetarians.

The seeds are a creamy-white color, with the odd speck of green. The taste is described as “nutty” and they are very pleasant to eat. I wouldn’t say I love the taste, but I do like it and, find the seeds soft and buttery.

In terms of use, these seeds are so extremely versatile. You can sprinkle 1 – 4 tablespoons on almost anything you eat (1 serving is considered 3 spoonfuls). They are fantastic for kids of all ages. They are great on salads, pasta dishes, stir fry dishes and really anything you can think of. They are great in smoothies too! You can bake with them, but I would recommend sticking to eating them in their wholesome, raw form to avoid any nutrient loss.

For best freshness, hemp seeds should be refrigerated. Enjoy!
